The bridge opened to traffic on September 20, 2006, ahead of the official opening date of December 5, 2006. It is part of Bangkok’s Industrial Ring Road, a royal plan initiated by King Bhumibol Adulyadej to solve traffic problems within and around Bangkok, particularly in the industrial area around Khlong Toei Port, in the south of Bangkok and Samut Prakan province. According to tradition, all the bridges over the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok are named after a royal family member. [citation needed] In October 2009, it was announced that both bridges would be named after King Bhumibol Adulyadej, with the northern bridge officially called “Bhumibol 1 Bridge” and the southern bridge “Bhumibol 2 Bridge”. The unofficial name “Mega Bridge” was also widely used.

The bridge was featured on the Discovery Channel. Although the bridges are the fastest way to travel to Bangkok from Phra Pradaeng district in Samut Prakan province, motorcycles have been banned from the two Bhumibol bridges since November 1, 2018, for safety reasons.

It has two main cable-stayed sections supported by two diamond-shaped ones.

The first bridge is Bhumibol 1, the northern one connecting Yan Nawa, Bangkok, and Phra Pradaeng. It is 50 m above the river level. The second is called Bhumibol 2 and has practically the same structure. Like the first. Can you imagine how beautiful this construction is?

Structure:

Bhumibol 1 Bridge is the northern bridge connecting Yan Nawa District, Bangkok and Phra Pradaeng District. It is a cable-stayed bridge with seven lanes and two tall piers. The structure is made of reinforced concrete 50 m above the water level. 

Bhumibol Bridge 2 is the south bridge. The structure is almost the same as the Bhumibol 1 Bridge, with seven lanes and two high piers and is built of reinforced concrete 50m above the river level.
