History of Pattaya:

Pattaya was initially known as “Thap Phraya”, indicating that the Phraya Army marked the surrender of the Nai Klom Army to the Phraya Tak Army without being involved in any fighting. Later the name changed from Thap Phraya to Phatthaya (Northeastern wind at the beginning of the rainy season) and then to Pattaya according to the actual phonetic spelling. The city became famous as a recreation centre after the Vietnam War, especially among American soldiers. Rest by US officers in 1959, today Pattaya has dramatically transformed into one of Asia’s premier tourist destinations.

Every place vibrates with loud music, and drinks are served in abundance. The northern part of town is quieter but has a good selection of pubs and bars. Shopping in Pattaya:

Like most of Thailand, Pattaya is a shopaholic’s paradise, although it doesn’t quite match Bangkok. However, there are plenty of options to choose from: numerous floating markets, elegant malls, supermarkets and bazaars. The best things to buy include clothing, shoes, jewellery, silk, plants, and handicrafts. The place is also known for its gemstones, as the centre of the Chanthaburi gemstone mining industry is nearby. While you’re at the floating markets, make sure to put your haggling skills to the test. Better be careful of counterfeit products.
