A Brief History of Kamphaeng Phet

Kamphaeng Phet was once a flourishing city, founded in the 14th century by King Ramathibodi I of Ayutthaya. It served as a strategic outpost between Ayutthaya and Sukhothai, the two great kingdoms of Thailand at the time. The city was well fortified with walls and moats, making it an important military stronghold.

During the 15th and 16th centuries, Kamphaeng Phet grew in prominence and became a major center for trade and commerce. It was also a hub of religious and cultural activities, with numerous temples, shrines, and other religious sites dotting the landscape.

However, the city’s glory days were short-lived. It was repeatedly attacked and plundered by the Burmese in the 16th and 18th centuries, and its population dwindled. By the 19th century, Kamphaeng Phet was nothing more than a forgotten city, hidden in the jungle.

Rediscovery and Restoration

It wasn’t until the 20th century that Kamphaeng Phet was rediscovered by archaeologists and historians. Excavations began in the 1960s, and over the years, the ruins of the city have been carefully restored and preserved.

Today, Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park is a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the world to admire its stunning architecture and learn about its rich history.

Exploring Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park

The park is divided into two zones: the inner city and the outer city. The inner city was where the royal palace and other important buildings were located, while the outer city was home to the common people.

Here are some of the must-see sites in Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park

  1. Wat Phra Kaeo: This temple is located in the inner city and was once home to the Emerald Buddha, Thailand’s most revered religious relic. Today, the temple is a stunning example of 14th-century architecture, with intricate carvings and delicate stonework.
  2. Kamphaeng Phet National Museum: Located near the park’s entrance, this museum showcases artifacts from the city’s history, including pottery, jewelry, and other relics.
  3. Wat Phra That: This temple is located in the outer city and is famous for its towering pagoda, which is visible from miles away.
  4. Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park Wall: The walls and moats of Kamphaeng Phet were built to protect the city from invasion. Today, visitors can walk along the walls and admire the stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

Visiting Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park is a unique experience that will transport you back in time to Thailand’s glorious past. Whether you’re a history buff or simply appreciate beautiful architecture, this park is not to be missed.
