Koh Kood

Koh Kood

Koh Kood (sometimes spelled Koh Kut) is a picturesque Thai island that has yet to be swamped by tourists. This island is the sixth largest in Thailand and is home to fewer than 2,000 people, but it takes up an impressive 105 square kilometers of oceanic territory. In 1904, Khmers and Thais arrived on the island and started living off the catch of the day, coconuts, and tree sap. Also, Koh Kood’s beaches are among the best in the world, with crystal-clear water and soft white sand that has earned it comparisons to the Maldives.

The island of Koh Kood came straight out of a storybook. Resorts on the island with names like “Peter Pan” and “Tinkerbell” add credence to the story. There is nothing even close to the nightlife here. After the sun goes down, you can enjoy alone time with the waves, the moon, and a beverage of choice. When the weather is right, Ko Kut is a fantastic place to go snorkeling or scuba diving.

Nightlife in Koh Kood

Koh Kood is not the place to go if you want to party till the sun comes up on the beach, like on many other Thai islands. This island has a more chill atmosphere, and many pubs provide good cocktails and entertaining live music. Sunset Bar, Jah Thoom, and Tawan Eco Bar are three pubs on the west coast, all within walking distance of Klong Chao beach, that never fail to deliver a good time (which is known for its decent tunes that echo through the place at the end of the day and occasional parties).

In addition to the Sea Bar at the Peter Pan Resort on Klong Chao Beach, the Baptist and the Fisherman Hut Music Station are popular late-night hangouts for both residents and visitors to Koh Kood. And if you are on the island for the New Year, you may join in on the one sizeable traditional party, complete with the delicious regional fare, fireworks, and live entertainment. Many hotels and motels also throw New Year’s Eve parties for their guests.

Tips While Visiting Koh Kood

  • Scooter rentals (mainly Yamaha automatics and 125cc Honda motors) are the best option for getting around Koh Kood, as few public transportation options and shared taxis are usually reserved for tourist day trips. You can get around the island quickly and easily on a scooter, so renting one is a great idea. Pricing for rent ranges from 250 THB to 500 THB per month (depending on the condition and age of the scooter). It’s important to remember that gas from the gas station (located north of the hospital) is less expensive than bottles from the roadside stands.
  • There are only a few stores on the island, so it’s better whole bring what you believe you’ll need than to count on them while you’re there. If the item turns out to be unavailable at Koh Kood, you won’t have to deal with the disappointment and frustration of searching in vain.
  • You’ll need to bring your light sources if you don’t relish the prospect of navigating the nighttime streets of Koh Kood, as there needs to be adequate street lighting. Furthermore, while some people use their phones’ flashlights, it’s always a good idea to have a backup torch on hand in case your primary one ever dies.
  • Koh Kood’s more secluded beaches may have a higher sandfly population. Therefore, it’s wise to bring some hydrocortisone cream or coconut oil or purchase some local ‘Yellow oil’ from the island’s shops and resorts. The itching and swelling that can result from an insect bite can be alleviated with the help of this locally-produced oil.
