Thailand has over 1,000 hospitals, with over 470 of them being private. The country is proud to have Asia’s largest private hospital and the first Asian hospital to receive ISO 9001 certification and JCI accreditation. To date, the JCI has accredited 37 private hospitals in Thailand.
Private hospitals primarily drive Thailand’s medical tourism industry. Thai doctors are drawn to international hospitals because they can earn up to 70% more than those in public hospitals.
Bumrungrad International Hospital, Bangkok Hospital Group, and Samitivej Hospitals lead private hospitals. These hospitals are rapidly gaining international acclaim. They are well-known for catering primarily to foreign patients and have actively sought medical tourists since the early 2000s. Around 30-50% of patients in these hospitals are foreigners who find the hospitals less expensive than in their home countries. However, because wages in Thailand are low, most Thais consider the prices in these hospitals to be exorbitant.
