The Phuket Mining Museum

The Phuket Mining Museum

The Phuket Mining Museum, an impressive pink Sino-Portuguese-style building, offers a glimpse into Phuket’s rich mining history. Also known as the Kathu Mining Museum, this intricately designed structure houses many special mining artifacts. One of the main attractions is a scale model of a mine showing hundreds of wax figures at work. Along with rubber and fishing, tin mining has made Phuket wealthy and attracted many immigrants from China and other countries. The park outside Phuket Mining Museum has many abandoned mining tools and machine parts. Inside, you will find numerous exhibits and images recreating the tin mines, the opium den, and the living and working conditions of the workers and a glimpse into the daily life of their families.

There is also a room full of pewter stones, technical information, and photographs. The Phuket Mining Museum is one of the most interesting museums on the island. Located in Kathu, on the road between Loch Palm Golf Club and the British International School, the museum features exhibits ranging from models of tin mines to a recreated scene in an opium den. A tour with a guide (or someone knowledgeable of Phuket’s history) is recommended, as most signs and descriptions are in Thai only. Minimal entrance fee.

Phuket Mining Museum highlights

Phuket was an important center of tin production in the past, attracting thousands of Chinese workers who eventually settled on the island. In short, Phuket would not have its multicultural identity without Zinn. And indoor exhibits. Outside the building, visitors will see some styles of tin mining methods as well as some actual implements used in days gone by. Many exhibits, including photographs, illustrate the workers’ life and working conditions.

There is also a good section on the local people who lived in Kathu village at the time. Kathu was considered an important area for this industry. While the men went out and did the hard work, the women stayed home to raise the children. A little extra work in their free time to make more money, like making brooms out of reeds and making candy to sell. Looking at these displays feels like looking into someone’s kitchen or private room when the owners aren’t there. Around or unconscious.

The models are realistic. The Phuket Mining Museum is a very informative cultural and historical attraction. It was built in the Sino-Portuguese style, similar to the old mansions of the wealthy Chinese families scattered around old Phuket. Urban area.

The Tin mining era of Phuket

The Phuket Mining Museum (or Kathu Mining Museum) was built with unusual splendor in a very remote and isolated location behind Kathu’s Loch Palm Golf Club, somewhere in the hills outside Patong. Phuket’s museums aren’t precisely livable places for artists to display their creations, but this one gives you a pretty good glimpse of what Phuket was famous for during the tin mining era. Driving through Phuket Mining Museum’s massive double-arched entrance gate and along the lake, you come to a monumental Sino-Portuguese pink building. If you zoom in, you might start to have high expectations, and the creators probably had them, too, looking at the many abandoned shopping carts in the parking lot.
