A Brief History Of Bang Tao Beach
It’s challenging to realize that the Bang Tao neighborhood was once a battleground. The lovely park, lagoon, and beach area you see now in Bang Tao was a bleak, devastated terrain thirty years ago.
The Bang Tao area was once one of Thailand’s most profitable tin mines, and it was from here that much of Phuket’s wealth was derived. However, as tin and rubber prices fell dramatically in the 1970s, the mines were forced to close, leaving the area in disarray.
Bang Tao severely needed new jobs and income, so several Singapore developers and people in business came up with the idea of turning Bang Tao into a tourist attraction. The beach in Bang Tao was still gorgeous and untouched. However, the mine pits had destroyed the surrounding countryside and polluted and poisoned the rivers and canals.
The restoration took several years, but the area gradually returned to life. The former tin mines have been transformed into magnificent lagoons and park areas connected by thin canals. Today, Bang Tao is a beautiful environment ideal for a beach vacation.
Bang Tao Beach Today
Bang Thao Beach (or Bangtao Beach) is one of Phuket Island’s longest beaches in southern Thailand.
This half-moon-shaped cove on the island’s west shore spans over 8 kilometers of fine white sand. The picturesque Bang Tao Beach is surrounded by forest and trees, and you can’t even see or hear the road.
It’s a calm and quiet beach. Unlike Phuket’s other beaches, Bang Tao Beach is free of sunbeds and umbrellas, noisy jet skis, banana boats, water activities, and aggressive vendors. Bang Tao Beach is all about finding that zen moment and enjoying some tranquility while still having access to some of Phuket’s most outstanding hotels, restaurants, and cafés.
Bang Tao is one of Phuket’s more “high-end” vacation locations, with many luxury resorts and top-notch restaurants. However, there are several excellent mid-range hotels and hip hostels at the beach’s southern end.
