Wat Arun in Bangkok, also known as the Temple of Dawn, is located on the western side of the Chao Phraya River. General information about War Arun
The full name of this Temple is Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchaworamaha Wihan. However, locals and tourists always refer to it by its short title, Wat Arun or Temple of Dawn. This beautiful temple complex is located on the west bank. From the Chao Phraya River and can be easily reached by ferry or taxi. On the opposite side are the famous Wat Pho and Wat Phra Khao. The history of Wat Arun dates back to the Ayutthaya times.
But then this Temple was called Wat Makok, which translates as the Temple of the Olive Tree. The modern Temple’s name was named after Aruna, the Indian god of dawn. Hence Temple of Dawn. Architecturally, the Temple is based on a depiction of Mount Meru, the center of the world in Buddhist cosmology. In the first half of the 19th century, King Rama II restored the Temple, and the towers, which were only 16 meters high then, were increased to around 70 meters.
Things to see at Wat Arun
For a perfect visit to Wat Arun, allow some time as the temple grounds are quite extensive, and there are many beautiful buildings, pavilions and statues to explore. The best time to visit is in the morning or afternoon. At this time, it is quieter and more idyllic.
The Entrance of the Ordination Hall
A perfect place to take amazing pictures of Wat Arun is the famous crowned arch, which is the entrance to the Ubosot. The two giant statues, the yakshas, are beautifully decorated and give access to the monks’ ordination hall. Get an early start, and you’ll have this scenic area all to yourself.
The main Temple
This temple complex area is considered the most sacred part of Wat Arun. Especially the beautiful corridors with the Buddha statues made us fall in love with this beautiful Temple. Plus, there are fantastic photo opportunities. No wonder it’s considered one of the most Instagrammable spots in Bangkok! Another highlight of the Temple is the marble-clad courtyard. Numerous Chinese stone carvings depict lions, dragons, warriors and other mystical figures.
Wat Arun at sunset:
There is hardly anything more magical than this Temple. Opposite the other side of the river, you will find several rooftop bars where you can enjoy the best view of the Temple. The absolute best view of Wat Arun for watching the sunset is definitely from the rooftop terrace of Eagle Nest at Sala Arun Hotel, one of the best rooftop bars in Bangkok. From here, you can take beautiful photos of Wat Arun and enjoy the sunset from 18:00. m. Wat Arun is genuinely amazing to see when the Temple is brightly lit at night.
Cosmology
The central prang symbolizes Mount Meru in Hindu cosmology. The Prang satellites are dedicated to the wind god Phra Phai. The demons (yaksha) at the entrance to the ubosot are from the Ramakien. The white character is called Sahassa Deja, and the green one is known as Thotsakan, the Ravana demon from the Ramayana.
